POCKET-SIZED ISLANDS

Elena Braghieri, my photographer friend

Like all Summers before, I sailed from Ischia to the Eolie islands. During the evening, as I ventured on a casual stroll, right after having stopped for an almond Granita, I found myself in a garden. On the right were green succulents, on the left Elena Braghieri’s photographs. Right away, I asked about her. Unfortunately Elena happened to be in Filicudi at that moment thus we didn’t get to meet  We ended up doing so in Milan, when she came visit me at the showroom. We hugged like old friends.

- Massimo

"The very first time I met Massimo, in his showroom right by the Navigli district, he extracted a handkerchief from his pocket, still adorned in the fresh scent of laundry, and brought it to me. “I make these, they remind me of my youth: my father used his own, white and encrypted, to blow my nose.” Such gesture was, to me, fueled with endless, beautiful nostalgia that I now can’t seem to use any other handkerchief but his.

Two years later, Massimo surprised me by revealing a photograph I shot in Alicudi framed between the pattern that has always distinguished his handkerchiefs. The memory of such mo-ment is still so vivid to me, I remember it like it was yesterday as I was greatly moved.

That was really the starting point for this collection: fragments of islands to always keep with you, even when the only available mean to travel is our imagination. Kept in your pocket, tied around your neck or in your hair, hanging in the wind, framed in your home to always keep a small piece of the sea, I hope they can bring and convey the same energy the islands give me."
